Farm Animal Cremation in Sicily: what to know
Backyard poultry has become common in towns and suburbs throughout Sicily, and pet pigs and miniature goats have followed in some places. Local codes that allow them rarely say what to do when one dies, and many restrict livestock burial inside city limits. In practice, most town and suburban keepers use a pet crematory, or communal cremation for a single hen.
Most farm animal deaths in Sicily happen on small places: a few acres behind a house, a backyard coop, a pig pen at the end of a garden. Those keepers rarely have a renderer on speed dial or a machine to dig with. For them, a crematory with its own collection vehicle is usually the most practical route, and it's the one this guide explains most fully.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
Vets in Sicily, where around 38.16%[1] of people are cremated, are used to owners who bury, and yours may assume that's your plan. If you'd rather have the ashes, say so early, ideally before a planned euthanasia, so the vet can hold the body, phone a crematory or tell you where to deliver it.
That Sicily rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Budgeting in Sicily for a pig, ewe or goat
By our estimate, individual cremation across the markets we track costs about double the shared option[2], and for a heavy animal the gap in euros grows. Around Sicily, check whether VAT is included and whether collection from a rural address is priced per kilometre. A written quote naming the species avoids surprises at the door.
In Sicily, as across much of Europe, dead sheep, goats and pigs are normally handled under animal by-product rules, which favour collection by an approved service over burial. If you want your animal's own ashes back, ask a pet crematorium whether it accepts farmed species at your animal's weight, and whether individual cremation is confirmed in writing.
| Country and weight | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| France, 50 kg animal | €130 to €180[3] | €300 to €400[3] |
| Germany, all sizes | €85 to €205[4] | €165 to €375[4] |
| Norway, 51 to 90 kg | NOK 1,895[5] | NOK 4,990[5] |
| Netherlands, dog average | about €200[6] | about €300[6] |

Before you bury or compost in Sicily
You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Sicily; livestock rules can be stricter.
In Italy, dead farmed animals, including pet sheep, goats and pigs, normally go through authorised collection under EU animal by-product rules rather than being buried on the land. Some pet crematoria accept smaller farm species for individual cremation; ask about weight limits and paperwork, and check with your ASL veterinary service if the cause of death is unclear.
What to do first, second and third
- Tell your child soon, in plain words. "Your goat died this morning" is kinder than a softer phrase that leaves a young child waiting for the animal to come back.
- Let them choose whether to see the body. Covered with a blanket, with only the head showing, is usually gentle enough for school-age children.
- Give them a job: a final brush of the coat, deciding which halter to keep, or gathering flowers to put by the gate.
- Time the collection around them. One child will want to see the crew leave; another is better off at a friend's house or in class while it happens. Tell the crew you'd like a pickup with no rush.
- If the animal was a club or show project, let the leader know. This won't be the first young member they've seen through it, and they may offer a tribute at the following meeting.
- Plan something for when the ashes come home: planting a tree, scattering them beside the fence line, or a little urn for their bedroom shelf.
Ways to remember a farm companion
A simple wooden or stone marker by the gate, the animal's name burned into a fence post or a photo on the feed-room wall are all fitting ways to remember a hobby-farm companion. If you'd like something more permanent, a small memorial corner with a bench and a planted tree can hold ashes from more than one animal over the years.

Questions people ask
What should I keep ready in Sicily if I have older goats or sheep?
A tarp big enough to drag the animal, gloves, a sheet or feed sacks to cover it, contact details for a large-animal crematory that will accept your animals, and a note of your wishes: private or communal, and any keepsake. In a hot spell or a hard freeze, that preparation saves hours.
Is farm animal cremation common in Sicily?
For people, about 38.16%[1] of deaths in Sicily end in cremation. For farm animals, burial and fallen-stock collection are still the traditional routes, but more families choose private cremation for the goats, pigs, sheep and alpacas they've named, especially in towns and on hobby farms near the cities.
Where in Sicily is farm animal cremation hardest to arrange?
Usually in the most rural areas, where crematories that accept large animals are furthest away and collection charges climb with every mile. Keepers there often deliver the animal themselves by trailer, or split a pickup with a neighbor. Ask any provider where their collection radius ends before you need them.
How much does it cost to cremate a goat, sheep or pig in Sicily?
Prices depend mostly on weight and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus farm collection and mileage. A small goat often costs about the same as a large dog; a heavy pig, llama or donkey may be quoted individually or sent to a large-animal crematory. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Can I get a quote for farm animal cremation in Sicily before my animal dies?
Yes, and it's a good idea for older stock. Call a provider with the species, an honest weight and your address, and ask for a written estimate covering cremation, collection and the urn. Most are glad to answer. You can also send us a request and we'll reply by email with options that serve your area.
How quickly does a dead farm animal need to be dealt with in Sicily?
Many rules set a time limit, often a day or two after death, and warm weather shortens the practical window further because goats, sheep and alpacas bloat quickly. Keep the body shaded and loosely covered and arrange collection or delivery the same day if you can.
