Lombardy, Italy
Farm Animal Cremation in Lombardy: what to know
Hobby farms and backyard flocks are spread right throughout Lombardy, from the metro fringe to deep countryside. The difference in aftercare between the two is mostly distance. Near the cities there are more crematories, but many cap weight well below a grown goat or pig. In rural areas, burial and fallen-stock collection are the traditional routes, and cremation may mean a trailer ride to a larger centre.
The rules for dead farm animals in Lombardy were written for farms and water safety, not for a pet pig that sleeps by the stove. They usually set a time limit, a minimum burial depth and distances from wells and streams, and they apply whether you keep one goat or a hundred. Cremation fits inside all of them, which is one reason more hobby farmers choose it.

Cremation rates in Lombardy and your animal
With about 38.16%[1] of people cremated, Lombardy is a place where burial is still the usual choice for people and animals alike. That has two effects for farm pets: fewer crematories nearby, and a vet who knows both routes well. Ask openly about cremation, communal or private, even if nobody you know has done it for a goat.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Lombardy rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Lombardy
European pet crematoria price by weight, and published examples give a feel for what a goat or sheep might cost. In France, individual cremation for a 50 kg animal is listed at €300 to €400, against €130 to €180 for collective[2]. Many European countries route farmed species to an approved rendering service by default, so confirm that a crematorium in or near Lombardy will take your species before you book.
Prices in Italy will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.
| Country and weight | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| France, 50 kg animal | €130 to €180[2] | €300 to €400[2] |
| Germany, all sizes | €85 to €205[3] | €165 to €375[3] |
| Norway, 51 to 90 kg | NOK 1,895[4] | NOK 4,990[4] |
| Netherlands, dog average | about €200[5] | about €300[5] |

Livestock law and pet rules in Lombardy
Rules for dead farm animals change more across borders than almost any other part of pet aftercare. England bans burying pet pigs, sheep and goats; many US states allow it with conditions; California even bans composting whole sheep and goats. The general notes for Lombardy follow. Treat them as the pet baseline and check livestock rules on top.
In Italy, dead farmed animals, including pet sheep, goats and pigs, normally go through authorised collection under EU animal by-product rules rather than being buried on the land. Some pet crematoria accept smaller farm species for individual cremation; ask about weight limits and paperwork, and check with your ASL veterinary service if the cause of death is unclear.
What to do when a farm animal dies in Lombardy
- Cover the body loosely, then shift it somewhere shaded or into a cool shed, if that can be done safely.
- Let the herd or flock settle. Some keepers leave the body with a bonded companion for a short while; others move it straight away. Both are fine.
- Talk to your vet about why it died, whether anything must be reported and, for a sheep or goat, what testing is available.
- Compare two providers if you can. For farm animals, quotes differ far more on weight caps and pickup fees than on the cremation itself.
- Confirm whether it's private, partitioned or communal, and get it on paper, since the three terms get muddled.
- Choose what the ashes come home in. A hen needs only a small container; a goat or sheep needs a full-size urn or scatter tube.
Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm
Choosing an urn for a goat or sheep is easier with a number in mind. The trade rule of thumb is about one cubic inch of urn space per pound of body weight[7], so by our estimate a 120 lb ewe needs something near 120 cubic inches, bigger than most dog urns on a shop shelf. The urn size calculator does the sums, and if you'll scatter most of the ashes, a small keepsake is plenty.

Questions people ask
Can I bury a pet goat, sheep or pig on my land in Lombardy?
It depends on the species and the local rules. Many places allow burial of livestock on your own land with conditions on depth, distance from wells and water, and timing; some ban it for farmed species altogether, and cities often restrict it within their limits. If your animal was euthanized, deep burial or cremation protects wildlife.
Does winter affect farm animal aftercare in Lombardy?
In colder places, yes. Frozen ground can make burial impossible for months, composting slows down, and snow can block farm tracks. In Lombardy, one of the coldest places we cover in Lombardy, average winter lows reach about °F. Many keepers cremate in winter and scatter or bury the ashes in spring.
What should I do if a farm animal dies in the heat?
Move the body into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely. Put ice along the belly if collection is delayed. In hot parts of Lombardy, such as Lombardy where summer highs average about °F, same-day collection or delivery is the safest plan.
Is farm animal cremation common in Lombardy?
For people, about 38.16%[1] of deaths in Lombardy end in cremation. For farm animals, burial and fallen-stock collection are still the traditional routes, but more families choose private cremation for the goats, pigs, sheep and alpacas they've named, especially in towns and on hobby farms near the cities.
Is fallen-stock collection an option for a single pet goat or sheep in Lombardy?
Often, yes, where a knacker, renderer or deadstock collector still serves your area. It's lawful, quick and usually inexpensive, but nothing is returned. Rendering capacity has shrunk in many places, so the truck may not run for one small animal. Ask your vet who collects locally.
How much does it cost to cremate a goat, sheep or pig in Lombardy?
Prices depend mostly on weight and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus farm collection and mileage. A small goat often costs about the same as a large dog; a heavy pig, llama or donkey may be quoted individually or sent to a large-animal crematory. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
