Bari, Apulia
Finding a crematory that takes farm species near Bari
Summer in Apulia is hot and dry, and a large animal's body needs to be dealt with quickly. Working livestock is normally collected through the agricultural disposal system, while a family horse, donkey or pet goat can sometimes be cremated individually with the ashes returned. Be clear which applies when you ask, since it changes who can help and how far the animal may need to travel.
Beyond Bari, Apulia is farm country: olive groves, vineyards and old fortified farmhouses called masserie on the Murgia plateau and toward the Itria valley. Horses, donkeys, sheep, goats and some cattle are kept there, and the Murgia even has its own native horse breed. When a large animal dies in the countryside, share the location, the track and how close a vehicle can get.
Bari sits in the middle ground for farm animal aftercare. There's usually at least one pet crematory in or near town, and often a mixed-practice vet who treats goats, sheep and pigs as well as dogs. Whether either can take your animal depends almost entirely on its weight. A pygmy goat or a few hens are easy; a full-size dairy goat, an alpaca or a mature pet pig may need a larger chamber, sometimes around Bari or further out.
Bari's population is around 326,000.
The closest communities we cover are Naples (137 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Bari too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How Italy thinks about cremation
About 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, one of the lower rates. In rural areas, stock has always been buried on the farm or collected, and that's still a perfectly lawful choice in many places. If you'd rather have your animal's ashes, you're not being unusual, just ahead of the local habit. Ask your vet which crematory other smallholders use.
The Italy figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Planning around the seasons in Bari
Without local weather figures for Bari, trust your own sense of the day. If you're comfortable in a T-shirt, treat it as warm and move quickly; if the troughs are icing over, you have more time but harder access. Farm animals don't die to a forecast, so plan for the week you're in and the one ahead.

Budgeting in Bari for a pig, ewe or goat
Prices in Italy will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.
The full price table by size is on our Apulia page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Livestock and pet rules in Apulia
If you rent your land or keep animals on someone else's property, the landowner's say matters as much as the law. Many tenancies and grazing agreements forbid burial, and a landlord may not want a compost pile either. Cremation needs nobody's permission. Here's the general picture for pets in Apulia; your lease may add conditions of its own.
In Italy, dead farmed animals, including pet sheep, goats and pigs, normally go through authorised collection under EU animal by-product rules rather than being buried on the land. Some pet crematoria accept smaller farm species for individual cremation; ask about weight limits and paperwork, and check with your ASL veterinary service if the cause of death is unclear.
The first day, step by step
- Ask the clinic what happens if you give no instructions. The default at a lot of practices is to pass farm animals to a renderer or into a communal cremation.
- Say plainly if the ashes should come home, then have the staff note "private cremation" on the record while you're still there.
- Raise the question of a post-mortem now. Arranging one is much simpler while the body remains at the clinic; once it has left for the crematory, it's a different matter.
- Find out who bills you. Some practices add the cremation to their own invoice; others hand you the crematory's number to pay directly.
- Ask for the halter, collar or tag to be kept for you, and a few feathers or a snip of fleece too if you haven't already taken one.
- Plan the evening at home. Herd mates may call for the missing animal when you come back without it; extra hay and a familiar routine help.
A lasting place for your animal near Bari
Stony ground, dry-stone walls and narrow country roads around Bari can make access to a large animal harder than expected. If you're caring for an ageing horse or donkey on a masseria or smallholding, ask now what collection would involve, whether individual cremation is possible in the region, and what it would cost. Planning ahead spares you urgent phone calls in the middle of an August heatwave.

Questions people ask
How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Bari page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Do I have to report the death of a backyard hen or pet pig?
A single death with an obvious cause usually doesn't need reporting. Unexplained deaths in poultry, pigs, sheep or goats are different: several diseases in these species are notifiable, and the authorities would rather hear about a false alarm than miss an outbreak. Call your vet first; they'll know whether to involve the animal health authority.
Will a pet crematory near Bari take a goat or sheep?
Many will, but not all. Pet crematories are built around dogs and cats, and some cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb or don't take farm species at all. Give the species and an honest weight estimate on the first call. If the answer is no, ask who they'd recommend; they usually know which local providers take larger animals.
Can I be present for my goat or pig's cremation?
Some providers offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be there as it begins. Large-animal crematories may only run big animals on certain days, so ask early. If being present isn't possible, you can still hold a short goodbye at the farm gate before collection and send a halter or a handful of hay along.
Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?
If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
Can I keep backyard chickens and goats in Bari, and does that change aftercare?
Many local rules allow a few hens, and some allow miniature goats or a pet pig, usually with limits on numbers. The same rules often restrict burying livestock in built-up areas, and leases or homeowner and residents' associations can be stricter. In practice, most city keepers choose cremation, which avoids the question. Check before planning a burial.
