Farm animal cremation in Galway

Galway, Connacht

Goats, pigs and backyard flocks in Galway

Galway has deep horse roots, from the summer race festival at Ballybrit to the Connemara pony shows out west. A pony that taught the children to ride is a family member. If you want the ashes, or a plait of mane, a shoe or the head collar kept aside, say so as soon as you make contact, because it is difficult to arrange afterward.

In Ireland, farmed animals that die are normally collected by an approved knackery rather than buried on the farm, and horses carry passports that need to be returned when they die. For a family pony or retired horse, individual cremation with ashes returned is also possible, though the service may be some distance away. Ask about both routes before the day comes.

Burial is still common around Galway, and on your own land it's often allowed for many species, with conditions. Those conditions matter: a minimum depth, distances from wells and streams, and in many places a time limit after death. A 150 lb goat needs a much bigger hole than a dog, usually dug by machine. If your animal was euthanized, go deeper than the minimum or choose cremation to protect scavenging wildlife.

Galway's population is around 80,000.

Galway sits within easy reach of Cork (98 miles, a larger centre) and Dublin (116 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Galway; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

26.56%[1]

In 2024, 26.56% of deaths in the Republic of Ireland were cremated (9,341 of 35,173; excludes one crematorium).

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Ireland, and what they mean for your animal

With about 26.56%[1] of people cremated, Ireland is a place where burial is still the usual choice for people and animals alike. That has two effects for farm pets: fewer crematories nearby, and a vet who knows both routes well. Ask openly about cremation, communal or private, even if nobody you know has done it for a goat.

We take the Ireland rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Galway, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Galway

Whatever the season, keep a few things ready in the barn if you have older stock: a big tarp, a couple of feed sacks or an old sheet, work gloves and the number of a crematory that accepts your kind of animal. It turns the first hour after a death from a scramble into a routine you can follow even when upset.

How much to budget in Galway

By our estimate, individual cremation across the markets we track costs about double the shared option[4], and for a heavy animal the gap in euros grows. Around Galway, check whether VAT is included and whether collection from a rural address is priced per kilometre. A written quote naming the species avoids surprises at the door.

The full price table by size is on our Connacht page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Livestock and pet rules in Connacht

A rough rule holds almost everywhere: the bigger the animal, the more the law cares where it ends up. A hen or duck is treated much like any small pet. A 150 lb ewe or a pig brings setbacks from wells, depth requirements and sometimes an outright ban. Here's what Connacht says about pets in general; expect a large farm species to be held to a higher standard.

In Ireland, dead farmed animals, including pet sheep, goats and pigs, normally go to an approved knackery or collection service under EU animal by-product rules, rather than being buried on the farm. If you'd like your animal's ashes, ask a pet crematorium whether it takes farm species at your animal's weight, and whether it can collect from your holding.

What to do when a farm animal dies in Galway

  1. Cover the body loosely, then shift it somewhere shaded or into a cool shed, if that can be done safely.
  2. Let the herd or flock settle. Some keepers leave the body with a bonded companion for a short while; others move it straight away. Both are fine.
  3. Talk to your vet about why it died, whether anything must be reported and, for a sheep or goat, what testing is available.
  4. Compare two providers if time allows. With farm species, weight limits and collection charges vary more than the cremation price.
  5. Confirm whether it's private, partitioned or communal, and get it on paper, since the three terms get muddled.
  6. Choose what the ashes come home in. A hen needs only a small container; a goat or sheep needs a full-size urn or scatter tube.

Remembering your animal in Galway

East Galway is cattle and sheep country, and west of the city, Connemara ponies and hill sheep graze the bogland and mountains. Many families on the edge of the city keep a pony or a few animals on a small holding. For a large animal, a provider needs the townland or Eircode, the animal's rough size and whether a lorry can get up the lane.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Galway?

The closest communities we cover are Cork (about 98 miles) and Dublin (about 116 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Galway too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Ireland?

For people, yes: about 26.56%[1] of Ireland deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Galway follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can I bring my goat or pig to the crematory myself?

Usually yes, and it often saves the whole collection fee. Call ahead to agree a time, confirm they accept the weight and ask how they unload. A pickup or small trailer with a ramp works well; lay the animal on a tarp so it can be slid rather than lifted. Bring a helper, and don't try to lift a heavy animal alone.

Can I get my animal's ashes back through fallen-stock collection?

No. Knackers, fallen-stock collectors and renderers process animals in bulk and nothing is returned. It's a respectful, lawful and inexpensive route, and some owners are comfortable with it. If you want your own animal's ashes, you need a private cremation, confirmed in writing, from a crematory that takes farm species.

Is a donkey treated like a horse or like livestock for burial?

It varies. Many rules group donkeys with horses, and in England equines are the notable exception to the ban on burying farm animals. Elsewhere, donkeys may fall under general livestock rules with depth and distance requirements. A standard donkey is also heavy enough to need an equine crematory. Check the rules for your area before deciding.

What's the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation?

Private means your animal is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. Partitioned means several animals share the chamber but are kept apart, so the ashes are mostly, not certainly, your animal's. Communal means animals are cremated together and nothing is returned. For a named goat or pig, ask for private in writing if the ashes matter.
