Farm Animal Cremation in Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Farm Animal Cremation in Schleswig-Holstein: what to know

If you keep goats, sheep, pigs, alpacas or poultry in Schleswig-Holstein, the practical questions after a death are nearly always the same. Is burial allowed for this species on my land, and how deep? How fast does it have to happen? Who will collect an animal this heavy? And can I have my own animal's ashes back? This page gives the regional picture; each city page goes into local detail.

Farm animal aftercare throughout Schleswig-Holstein depends on three things more than anything else: the species, its weight and how far you are from a crematory that will take it. A pet crematory in one of the larger cities may accept a pygmy goat or a few hens without fuss, while a 200 lb kunekune or a llama may need an equine or large-animal facility some distance away. Livestock rules apply to pet goats, sheep and pigs as well as herds.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Schleswig-Holstein

In Schleswig-Holstein, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That doesn't make livestock rules any softer, but it does mean cremation is a normal conversation. Many hobby farmers here choose it for a named goat, alpaca or pet pig partly because it keeps the animal with them if they ever sell the land, and partly because it avoids digging a deep grave by machine.

That Schleswig-Holstein rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds

In several European countries the default route for a dead sheep, goat or pig is collection by the national rendering service. Near Schleswig-Holstein that's usually the cheapest option, and nothing comes back. A pet crematorium is the alternative if you want the ashes; the prices in the table give a sense of the step up.

Prices in Germany will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.

Rules worth knowing in Schleswig-Holstein

In most places a pet goat or pig is still a goat or pig in the eyes of the law, so the rules written for farms apply to it. Those rules exist for water safety and disease control, and they tend to favor collection, rendering or cremation over burial. The notes below cover Schleswig-Holstein in general; ask your vet or animal health office about your species.

In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.

If your animal dies today: a plan for Schleswig-Holstein

  1. Check the time. When it's warm, try to get the animal picked up or dropped off before the day is out, because ruminants swell fast.
  2. Lay the body on a tarp that's sturdy enough to pull, and prop the head up a little if you can; loading will go much more smoothly afterwards.
  3. Call a vet if more than one animal has died, and also when something doesn't look right, above all with pigs or a backyard flock.
  4. Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Ask about chamber size, lifting gear and the collection radius.
  5. Get the price in writing, including any winch, after-hours or mileage charges.
  6. Watch the others. Donkeys, alpacas and goats sometimes pace or call out for days. Hold to the usual routine and spend longer with the animal that was closest.

Keeping your goat, pig or hen close

Planting something is a natural memorial on a smallholding. A fruit tree, a hedge of browse your goats loved, or a patch of wildflowers over scattered ashes gives you somewhere to stand and remember that changes with the seasons. If you ever move, the ashes kept back in an urn can come with you.

If Schleswig-Holstein is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

What should I do if a farm animal dies in the heat?

Move the body into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely. Put ice along the belly if collection is delayed. In hot parts of Schleswig-Holstein, such as Schleswig-Holstein where summer highs average about °F, same-day collection or delivery is the safest plan.

Is fallen-stock collection an option for a single pet goat or sheep in Schleswig-Holstein?

Often, yes, where a knacker, renderer or deadstock collector still serves your area. It's lawful, quick and usually inexpensive, but nothing is returned. Rendering capacity has shrunk in many places, so the truck may not run for one small animal. Ask your vet who collects locally.

How much does it cost to cremate a goat, sheep or pig in Schleswig-Holstein?

Prices depend mostly on weight and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus farm collection and mileage. A small goat often costs about the same as a large dog; a heavy pig, llama or donkey may be quoted individually or sent to a large-animal crematory. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.

Do I need to report the death of a backyard chicken or pig in Schleswig-Holstein?

Not usually for a single death with an obvious cause. Unexplained deaths, especially several birds or pigs in a short time, should be reported to your vet or animal health authority, because some diseases in poultry, pigs, sheep and goats are notifiable. Don't move or bury the animals until you've asked.

Why won't the pet crematory take my animal?

Usually because of weight or species. Many pet crematories are built for dogs and cats and cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb, or don't take pigs or ruminants at all. Equine and large-animal crematories take heavier animals. Ask the first provider who they'd recommend; they usually know.

Do the rules in Schleswig-Holstein treat a pet pig differently from a farm pig?

Usually not. Animal-health and disposal rules tend to follow the species rather than the reason you keep it, so a pot-bellied pig that lives in the house is generally covered by the same rules as a commercial one. That can limit burial and composting. Cremation is allowed for both.
