Farm Animal Cremation in Lower Saxony: what to know
Near Hanover you'll find the widest choice of crematories in Lower Saxony, but not always the widest choice for farm species. Rural providers, often set up for horses, can be the better fit for a sheep, alpaca or pig. The community pages below point you to what's realistic from each place, including how far a crew is likely to travel.
Most keepers in Lower Saxony have never had to arrange aftercare for a farm animal until the day it happens. That day tends to come with a heavy body, a short time window and a first phone call that ends with a pet crematory saying no. Knowing in advance which providers take your species, and roughly what they charge by weight, takes much of the pressure off.

The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in Lower Saxony: about 76.0%[1] of those who die there are cremated. That familiarity helps a little with farm animals. Families here rarely need to explain why they'd like the ashes rather than a grave, and pet crematories are well established. The limit is capacity rather than attitude: fewer of them take animals over about 150 lb, so the choice for a big goat or pig can be narrower than the local culture suggests.
We take the Lower Saxony percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn
European pet crematoria price by weight, and published examples give a feel for what a goat or sheep might cost. In France, individual cremation for a 50 kg animal is listed at €300 to €400, against €130 to €180 for collective[2]. Many European countries route farmed species to an approved rendering service by default, so confirm that a crematorium in or near Lower Saxony will take your species before you book.
By our estimate, individual cremation across the markets we track costs about double the shared option[3], and for a heavy animal the gap in euros grows. Around Lower Saxony, check whether VAT is included and whether collection from a rural address is priced per kilometre. A written quote naming the species avoids surprises at the door.
| Country and weight | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| France, 50 kg animal | €130 to €180[2] | €300 to €400[2] |
| Germany, all sizes | €85 to €205[4] | €165 to €375[4] |
| Norway, 51 to 90 kg | NOK 1,895[5] | NOK 4,990[5] |
| Netherlands, dog average | about €200[6] | about €300[6] |

What Lower Saxony allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Lower Saxony; livestock rules can be stricter.
In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.
What to do when a farm animal dies in Lower Saxony
- Cover the body loosely and move it into shade or a cool outbuilding if you can do so safely.
- Let the herd or flock settle. Some keepers leave the body with a bonded companion for a short while; others move it straight away. Both are fine.
- Talk to your vet about the cause of death, any reporting duty and, for sheep and goats, whether testing is offered.
- Compare two providers if you can. For farm animals, quotes differ far more on weight caps and pickup fees than on the cremation itself.
- Confirm whether it's private, partitioned or communal, and get it on paper, since the three terms get muddled.
- Choose what the ashes come home in. For a hen, a small container is plenty, while a sheep or goat will fill a full-size scatter tube or urn.
Keeping your goat, pig or hen close
Many smallholders scatter ashes where the animal lived: along the fence line it leaned on, under the tree it stripped every spring, in the corner of the paddock where it lay in the sun. Scattering on your own land is generally allowed even where burial isn't. Keep a little back in a keepsake urn if the family would like something in the house.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to cremate a goat, sheep or pig in Lower Saxony?
Prices depend mostly on weight and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus farm collection and mileage. A small goat often costs about the same as a large dog; a heavy pig, llama or donkey may be quoted individually or sent to a large-animal crematory. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
How many communities do you cover in Lower Saxony?
We currently have local farm animal aftercare guides for 1 communities in Lower Saxony, including Hanover. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices by weight, the rules for burial and composting, and how collection usually works there.
What should I keep ready in Lower Saxony if I have older goats or sheep?
A tarp big enough to drag the animal, gloves, a sheet or feed sacks to cover it, contact details for a large-animal crematory that will accept your animals, and a note of your wishes: private or communal, and any keepsake. In a hot spell or a hard freeze, that preparation saves hours.
Can I bury a pet goat, sheep or pig on my land in Lower Saxony?
It depends on the species and the local rules. Many places allow burial of livestock on your own land with conditions on depth, distance from wells and water, and timing; some ban it for farmed species altogether, and cities often restrict it within their limits. If your animal was euthanized, deep burial or cremation protects wildlife.
Why won't the pet crematory take my animal?
Usually because of weight or species. Many pet crematories are built for dogs and cats and cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb, or don't take pigs or ruminants at all. Equine and large-animal crematories take heavier animals. Ask the first provider who they'd recommend; they usually know.
What should I do if a farm animal dies in the heat?
Move the body into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely. Put ice along the belly if collection is delayed. In hot parts of Lower Saxony, such as Lower Saxony where summer highs average about °F, same-day collection or delivery is the safest plan.
