When a hobby-farm animal dies in Augsburg

Augsburg, Bavaria

Hobby-farm aftercare in Augsburg: the local picture

Augsburg is surrounded by the farmland of Bavarian Swabia, with dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep and goats on farms across the region, including the flat Lechfeld to the south. If your animal is kept on a farm or at a riding stable outside the city, tell us the village and describe the access to the yard or pasture. Soft fields can be a problem after rain.

Bavarian winters can leave farm tracks icy or snowbound, and in summer a large body needs quick attention. Let us know about gate widths, the state of the track and where the animal lies, so suitable equipment is sent. For an older horse or a retired farm animal, looking into options calmly in advance is always easier. Winter photos of the access road help.

Augsburg sits in the middle ground for farm animal aftercare. There's usually at least one pet crematory in or near town, and often a mixed-practice vet who treats goats, sheep and pigs as well as dogs. Whether either can take your animal depends almost entirely on its weight. A pygmy goat or a few hens are easy; a full-size dairy goat, an alpaca or a mature pet pig may need a larger chamber, sometimes around Munich or further out.

With roughly 295,000 residents, Augsburg is the 3rd-largest of the 5 Bavaria communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Munich, about 35 miles (57 km) away, which is where some providers serving Augsburg are based.

Augsburg sits within easy reach of Starnberg (33 miles), Munich (35 miles, a larger centre) and Regensburg (71 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Augsburg; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

76.0%[1]

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation

With cremation chosen for about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany, local families tend to expect it for their animals too. On a smallholding, that expectation meets livestock law: the options for a goat, sheep or pig are set by rules written for farms, not for pets. Cremation fits comfortably inside those rules almost everywhere, which is one more reason it's the common choice here.

Augsburg weather and your animal's first hours

Local weather affects two things: how quickly your animal needs to be collected, and whether burying or scattering outdoors is practical. In cold months the ground may be frozen; in hot months speed matters more than anything. Your vet or provider in Augsburg will know the seasons, so ask what they'd do at this time of year.

What farm animal cremation costs in Augsburg

In several European countries the default route for a dead sheep, goat or pig is collection by the national rendering service. Near Augsburg that's usually the cheapest option, and nothing comes back. A pet crematorium is the alternative if you want the ashes; the prices in the table give a sense of the step up.

Livestock law and pet rules in Bavaria

You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Bavaria; livestock rules can be stricter.

In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.

What to do when a farm animal dies in Augsburg

  1. Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
  2. Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. A close companion can have a few minutes to look at and sniff the body if that seems to settle it, then take it where the others can't see.
  3. Call your vet if the death was sudden or unexplained. Some diseases in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before anything else happens.
  4. Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. That one choice decides which providers can help: private cremation, communal cremation or fallen-stock collection.
  5. Weigh or estimate the weight honestly, then state it alongside the species as soon as you ring. Plenty of pet crematories set a limit far under what an adult pig or goat weighs.
  6. Ask for a written total that bundles the cremation, pickup, mileage and urn, and have it before any vehicle leaves.
  7. Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.

Remembering your animal in Augsburg

In Germany, large animals are usually collected through the regional animal disposal service, which doesn't return ashes. A private horse cremation can be arranged, but the few providers who do it may be far from Augsburg and charge considerably more. If you'd like the ashes back, say so clearly when you ask, and confirm the cremation will be individual. Ask for that in writing.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Augsburg?

Usually yes. Starnberg is about 33 miles away, Munich is about 35 miles away and Regensburg is about 71 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Where are the providers that serve Augsburg actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Munich, about 35 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Augsburg and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Augsburg follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How much ash will I get back from a goat, sheep or hen?

Cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[3]. A 70 lb pygmy goat returns roughly two to three and a half pounds of ash; a 160 lb alpaca returns five to eight. A hen returns only a spoonful or two, so ask for a small container rather than a standard urn. The urn size calculator on our tools page can help.

Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?

Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.

Should the rest of the herd see the body?

Many keepers find it helps. Goats, alpacas and donkeys in particular often settle better if a bonded companion is allowed a few minutes to see and sniff the body. Stay with them, then move the body out of sight before collection. Expect calling or pacing for a few days afterwards; steady routines help.
