Family burial plots still mean a great deal in France, where cremation accounts for just 44.91%[1] or so of people. Some keepers feel the same pull towards a grave on the farm. If the rules and the ground allow it, that's a fine choice. If not, burying the ashes rather than the body gives you the same place to visit, dug with a spade instead of a machine.

Many places expect a dead farm animal to be dealt with within a day or two, and some illnesses in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before the body goes anywhere. In France, dead farm animals are normally collected by the équarrissage (rendering) service rather than buried, and pet sheep, goats and pigs are usually treated the same way. If you want the ashes back, ask a pet crematorium for incinération individuelle and confirm it accepts your species and weight. Your vet or the mairie can advise on what's allowed locally.
What to do when a farm animal dies in Montpellier
- Tell your child soon, in plain words. Saying "Your goat died this morning" beats a vaguer phrase that leaves a small child expecting the animal to turn up again.
- Let them choose whether to see the body. For a school-age child, a blanket over everything but the head is generally gentle enough.
- Give them a job: brushing the coat one last time, choosing the halter to keep, or picking flowers to leave at the gate.
