Rockhampton, Queensland
What arranging farm animal cremation in Rockhampton is like
On a big station, heavy stock losses are usually dealt with on the property, but a family horse or a hand-raised steer is another matter, and many owners want its ashes. Around Rockhampton the realistic choices are an individual cremation, a knackery pickup, or a grave on your own land if council rules permit. Distances are long, so ask about travel time and cost early.
Rockhampton calls itself the Beef Capital of Australia, and the bull statues around town make the point; the country beyond is cattle station after cattle station. Horses work on many of those stations, and families on the fringe keep ponies, goats or a few poddy calves. When you ask for help with a big animal, describe the station track, the distance from the homestead and the animal's size.
Burial is still common around Rockhampton, and on your own land it's often allowed for many species, with conditions. Those conditions matter: a minimum depth, distances from wells and streams, and in many places a time limit after death. A 150 lb goat needs a much bigger hole than a dog, usually dug by machine. If your animal was euthanized, go deeper than the minimum or choose cremation to protect scavenging wildlife.
With roughly 79,000 residents, Rockhampton is the 8th-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover.
71%[1]
Australian cremation rates hovered around 70-72% between 2020 and 2023, with Sydney and Melbourne often above 80%.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
In Australia, about 71%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That doesn't make livestock rules any softer, but it does mean cremation is a normal conversation. Many hobby farmers here choose it for a named goat, alpaca or pet pig partly because it keeps the animal with them if they ever sell the land, and partly because it avoids digging a deep grave by machine.
The Australia percentage above is from FuneralSmart (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Rockhampton, not as a count of pets.
Planning around the seasons in Rockhampton
Weather matters for the living animals too. Heat stress hits pigs and heavily fleeced animals hard, and cold snaps are tough on old goats and young stock. If a death comes during extreme weather, check the rest of the herd or flock, and call your vet if more than one animal seems unwell.

Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn
Prices around Rockhampton depend mostly on weight and whether you want the ashes back. In New Zealand, an Auckland crematorium lists individual cremation at NZD 625 for a 70 to 95 kg animal, against NZD 215 for communal[4]. On a lifestyle block, ask whether the crew can reach the paddock or whether you'll need to bring the animal to the gate.

Before you bury or compost in Queensland
The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for Queensland below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.
In Australia, sheep, goats and pigs need a property identification code and NLIS identification even when they're pets, so a death may need recording against your PIC. Burial on rural land is usually allowed under state and council rules, but many suburban councils restrict it. Unusual deaths can be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline. Summer heat makes prompt collection important.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Queensland level first; our Queensland rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Rockhampton or your HOA adds anything.
The first day, step by step
- Check the time. When it's warm, try to get the animal picked up or dropped off before the day is out, because ruminants swell fast.
- Lay the body on a tarp that's sturdy enough to pull, and prop the head up a little if you can; loading will go much more smoothly afterwards.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died, and also when something doesn't look right, above all with pigs or a backyard flock.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Ask about chamber size, lifting gear and the collection radius.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure it covers mileage, out-of-hours fees and any winch charge.
- Watch the others. Donkeys, alpacas and goats sometimes pace or call out for days. Hold to the usual routine and spend longer with the animal that was closest.
Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm
Every three years Beef Australia brings cattle people from across the country to Rockhampton, and between times rodeo, campdrafting and pony club keep horses central to local life. The stock horse that worked the station for twenty years deserves a proper farewell. Ask on the very first call for the ashes back, or for a tail plait or a worn shoe to be kept.

Questions people ask
How do Australia attitudes to cremation compare?
FuneralSmart (2023) puts the Australia human cremation rate at about 71%[1]. We show it on the Rockhampton page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?
If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
Will a pet crematory near Rockhampton take a goat or sheep?
Many will, but not all. Pet crematories are built around dogs and cats, and some cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb or don't take farm species at all. Give the species and an honest weight estimate on the first call. If the answer is no, ask who they'd recommend; they usually know which local providers take larger animals.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
Can I be present for my goat or pig's cremation?
Some providers offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be there as it begins. Large-animal crematories may only run big animals on certain days, so ask early. If being present isn't possible, you can still hold a short goodbye at the farm gate before collection and send a halter or a handful of hay along.
What if my animal dies while we're away from home?
Ask whoever is minding the farm to call your vet first and you second. Before you travel, leave written instructions: private or communal, which provider, how much you're willing to spend and any keepsake to save. A signed note lets a sitter act quickly in hot weather instead of waiting for you to pick up the phone, and it spares them guessing what you'd want.
