Mackay, Queensland
Where farm species go after a death near Mackay
Cane farms and cattle grazing surround Mackay, and horses live on plenty of rural blocks through the Pioneer Valley, out toward Sarina and up the Bruce Highway. If a large animal dies, have the property address ready, along with its rough size and how a truck would get to it. In the wet season, black soil paddocks can bog a vehicle quickly, so mention that too.
Campdrafting, rodeo, pony club and race days at the local track all keep horses close to the heart of rural Mackay. A horse that carried a family through years of shows is not just livestock. If you want the ashes back, or a keepsake such as a tail plait, the saddle blanket or a shoe, ask for it on the first call so it isn't lost.
Families in and around Mackay often combine local and regional help: the goodbye happens in the barn or paddock with the local vet, the animal is moved to a trailer with a neighbor's help, and the cremation itself takes place further away. If you'd like to be present at the cremation, ask early, because the provider may only have certain days available for large animals.
Mackay's population is around 80,000, the 7th-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover.
71%[1]
Australian cremation rates hovered around 70-72% between 2020 and 2023, with Sydney and Melbourne often above 80%.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation rates in Australia and your animal
With cremation chosen for about 71%[1] of people in Australia, local families tend to expect it for their animals too. On a smallholding, that expectation meets livestock law: the options for a goat, sheep or pig are set by rules written for farms, not for pets. Cremation fits comfortably inside those rules almost everywhere, which is one more reason it's the common choice here.
FuneralSmart (2023) is where the Australia figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Mackay tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around the seasons in Mackay
Wherever you are, the rule for a farm animal is the same: shade, cover and speed. A goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death and can bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat. Lay the animal on its side on straw or a tarp, cover it loosely and ask for collection within the day.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds
Australian pet crematoria price by weight, and the top bands fit most farm pets. A provider survey puts the median individual cremation at about AUD 624 for a 40 to 60 kg pet and AUD 650 above 60 kg[4], while communal cremation starts from AUD 80[5]. A big wether or a mature pig may be quoted individually, and farm collection is usually extra.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Queensland: Queensland costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Livestock law and pet rules in Queensland
Before you dig anything for a pig, alpaca, goat or sheep, it helps to know who writes the rules. Usually it's the agriculture or environment authority rather than the local pet bylaws, because the worry is groundwater and disease moving between farms. The Queensland notes below cover pets generally; your vet or a farm advisory service can confirm what livestock rules add on top.
In Australia, sheep, goats and pigs need a property identification code and NLIS identification even when they're pets, so a death may need recording against your PIC. Burial on rural land is usually allowed under state and council rules, but many suburban councils restrict it. Unusual deaths can be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline. Summer heat makes prompt collection important.
Start with the Queensland rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Mackay's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do first, second and third
- Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
- Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. A close companion can have a few minutes to look at and sniff the body if that seems to settle it, then take it where the others can't see.
- Call your vet when the animal died without warning or you don't know why. Certain illnesses of pigs, poultry, sheep and goats carry a reporting duty that comes ahead of everything else.
- Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. That one choice decides which providers can help: private cremation, communal cremation or fallen-stock collection.
- Weigh or estimate the weight honestly, then state it alongside the species as soon as you ring. Plenty of pet crematories set a limit far under what an adult pig or goat weighs.
- Ask for a written total covering cremation, collection, mileage and the urn before anyone sets off.
- Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.
Remembering your animal in Mackay
Tropical heat means a heavy body cannot be left long around Mackay, and floods can close the roads out of town for days. Owners generally weigh three routes: a private cremation that sends ashes home, a knackery collection, or burial on the property where council rules allow it. Find out what each involves and costs during the dry season, when there is time to think.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Australia?
For people, yes: about 71%[1] of Australia deaths end in cremation, according to FuneralSmart (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Mackay follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
Will a pet crematory near Mackay take a goat or sheep?
Many will, but not all. Pet crematories are built around dogs and cats, and some cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb or don't take farm species at all. Give the species and an honest weight estimate on the first call. If the answer is no, ask who they'd recommend; they usually know which local providers take larger animals.
What if my animal dies while we're away from home?
Ask whoever is minding the farm to call your vet first and you second. Before you travel, leave written instructions: private or communal, which provider, how much you're willing to spend and any keepsake to save. A signed note lets a sitter act quickly in hot weather instead of waiting for you to pick up the phone, and it spares them guessing what you'd want.
Should the rest of the herd see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Goats, alpacas and donkeys in particular often settle better if a bonded companion is allowed a few minutes to see and sniff the body. Stay with them, then move the body out of sight before collection. Expect calling or pacing for a few days afterwards; steady routines help.
Should I ask for a post-mortem before cremation?
If the death was sudden and you have other animals, it's often worth it. A post-mortem can show whether parasites, poisoning or an infectious disease is putting the remaining animals at risk, and it has to happen before cremation. Ask your vet quickly, because a body that has spent a day in the heat is much harder to examine usefully.
