How to compare cremation quotes for a goat, sheep or pig

How should you compare farm animal cremation quotes?
Give every provider the same facts, ask each for a written, itemized total, and compare line by line rather than by the headline price. The same facts means species, a weight estimate, your address, private or communal, collection or drop-off, and what container you want the ashes in. Two quotes that start at the same figure can end hundreds of dollars apart once mileage, weight and delivery are added.
It's worth the effort because farm species rarely have a published price. Pet crematories are set up for dogs and cats; a 140 lb ewe or a 200 lb kunekune gets quoted by phone, often from a rough guess at the weight. Even for pets in general, prices are hard to find: a UK regulator review found only 2%[2] of vet websites that showed prices listed cremation.
Anatomy of a quote
What should a written cremation quote actually list?
A good quote reads like a receipt you haven't paid yet. If any of these lines is missing, ask for it before comparing, because a missing line often turns up later as an extra.
- Type of cremation, in plain words: private (alone), partitioned (shared chamber, kept apart) or communal (no ashes returned).
- The weight band used for pricing, and what happens if your animal weighs more than you guessed.
- Collection: the base fee, the free radius, the per-mile rate beyond it and any charge for a second person or winch.
- Timing charges: after-hours, weekend or holiday collection, and any rush fee.
- The container included as standard, and the price of any urn upgrade.
- Return of the ashes: collected by you, delivered, or shipped, and the cost of each.
- Paperwork and extras: a cremation certificate, a hoof or foot print, a fleece or feather clipping.
- The total, including tax, with a date the quote holds until.

The small print
Which extras catch farm animal owners out?
Most extras are fair charges for real work. The problem is only when you hear about them after the animal has left the farm. These are the ones that show up most often on farm species.

Some of these are small: one US provider lists prints and fur clippings at $5–$15[3] each. Others are not. One retailer's guide says a rushed turnaround commonly adds $50 to $150[4], and simple name engraving on an urn adds another $15–$25[5]. Add them up before you decide which quote is cheaper.
A worked example
What does a side-by-side comparison look like?
Say you have an old Romney ewe of about 140 lb, 35 miles from the nearest town, and you want her own ashes back. You ring three providers and ask each for a written total. The figures below are invented to show the method, not real prices from real businesses.

Provider B looked the dearest on the phone and turns out to be $25 more than A with delivery, a wooden box and a crew included. Provider C's low headline price grows once the ewe is over its 120 lb band. The cheapest line on a quote often tells you less than the rules around it.

Worth a second question
What are the red flags in a cremation quote?
- It just says "cremation". Without the word private, partitioned or communal, you can't know whether the ashes returned are only your animal's.
- No weight is written down. A price given without a weight band can change on the day of collection.
- They won't put it in writing. An email or text is enough. Reluctance to write down a price is worth noticing.
- No explanation of identification. A provider should say how your animal is tagged from your farm to the return of the ashes.
- Pressure to decide on the call. You usually have some hours, even in summer, to compare two quotes if the body is kept cool.

Making the calls
How do you ask for quotes when you're grieving and short of time?
Most people don't shop around at all. In the UK, 89%[6] of pet cremation buyers never compared providers, and of those, 49%[7] simply followed their vet's suggestion. That's understandable, and your vet's contact may be excellent, but farm species are the case where one extra call most often changes the answer. Those figures come from the Competition and Markets Authority's pet cremation report.
Write the facts down once and read the same words to everyone: species, breed if you know it, estimated weight, whether the animal is in a barn or a field, the nearest road access, private or communal, and the date you'd like collection. When is the cheapest quote the right one?
When it covers what you actually want. If you don't need ashes back, a communal cremation is often the kindest answer for your budget: by our estimate across eight markets, private costs a median of ~2.0x[9] the price of communal. For a hen or a duck the saving is small; for a 400 lb donkey it can be several hundred dollars.

Questions people ask
Why do cremation quotes for the same goat vary so much?
Providers price farm species differently because few handle them often. One may fold your goat into a large-dog band, another may treat anything over 100 lb as a special case. Collection distance, crew size and the container included also vary. Asking for an itemized written quote shows you exactly where the difference comes from.
Should a cremation quote include tax?
It should state whether tax is included. Rules on sales tax for pet cremation vary between states, so ask directly and make sure the total you compare is the amount you'll actually pay. A quote that lists a subtotal only makes side-by-side comparison harder.
Can a provider change the price after collecting my animal?
It can happen if the animal weighs more than the band you were quoted or extra equipment was needed. That's why the weight band and any surcharge per pound should be written on the quote. If your estimate is rough, say so, and ask what the price would be at the upper end of the range.
Is the vet's recommended crematory usually the cheapest?
Not necessarily. Many practices work with one provider out of convenience, and in the UK about 60%[10] of independent vet practices had an exclusive contract with a single crematorium. That provider may be excellent, but it is still worth one comparison call, especially for a large farm animal where collection costs vary widely.
How long is a cremation quote valid?
Ask. Many providers will hold a quoted price for a set period, and some adjust prices with fuel costs. If you are planning ahead for an elderly animal, ask for the quote in writing with a date, and check it again when the time comes, since collection fees in particular can change.
What if I can't afford any of the quotes?
Tell the provider your budget. Communal cremation, dropping the animal off yourself or choosing a simple container can bring the total down a lot. Some areas also have lower-cost routes such as rendering or, where legal, on-farm burial. None of these is a failure of love; they are practical choices many keepers make.
